Why Use a Weld Neck Flange?

Weld neck flanges are designed for severe service conditions involving high pressure, sub-zero or elevated temperatures, and significant pressure or temperature cycling. The long tapered hub provides crucial reinforcement, allowing the flange to act almost as an integral extension of the pipe rather than a separate fitting.

Because the wall thickness gradually matches that of the connecting pipe, weld neck flanges minimize stress concentration at the base of the hub — one of the most common failure points in piping systems under fatigue or thermal cycling.

Welding Process

Weld neck flanges are joined to the pipe using a single full-penetration butt weld at the hub. Unlike slip-on or socket weld flanges, there is no need for a fillet weld on both sides, since the butt weld alone provides a joint of equal strength to the pipe itself.

This single-weld construction also allows for 100% radiographic (X-ray) inspection of the weld, making weld neck flanges suitable for critical service applications where weld integrity must be fully verified and certified.

Facing Types

Weld neck flanges are available with multiple face types, including Raised Face (RF), Flat Face (FF), and Ring Type Joint (RTJ), depending on the gasket and sealing requirement of the application.

Raised Face is the most common facing, concentrating bolt load onto a smaller gasket area for a tighter seal. RTJ facing is reserved for high-pressure, high-temperature service where a metal-to-metal seal is required.
